Mahjong Scoring Guides

The style of mahjong that we play is based on the Chinese style, but it incorporates the scoring guide from the Brisbane U3A Chinese Mahjong group.

The following grid contains 6 scoring guides that are in different formats. The information in all of these documents is from the same source, but it is presented in different formats so that players can choose the format that suits them best. The options for the formats are:

• A list of all of the hands and points with detailed descriptions. This is available in both an A4 and booklet format
• A summary list of the hands and points, but without the detailed descriptions. This is available in both A4 and booklet format
• A list of each of the hands with an example photo of that hand. There is an accompanying document that lists all of the additional points that can be scored for each hand. These 2 documents are in A4 format

The A4 versions are best if you want to print without any special formatting. Download the pdf file and then print it out with normal printer settings.

The Booklet versions print in an A5 booklet format. Download the pdf and then print it out using double sided (duplex) printing on A4 paper. The pdf is already formatted as a booklet, so you do not need to do anything to convert it to a booklet. You can then fold the pages in half and it will become a booklet.

Scoring for the game

Our group plays by the rule that you must have at least 4 points in order to successfully call Mahjong. It is possible to claim Mahjong either be collecting at least 4 individual points, or you can build one of the listed Hands, and then add to the points (using the additional points available for that Hand). So the scoring guides identify the Hands and the additional Points.

The points that can be added to a hand are broken into two types:

• Basic Points can be claimed against every hand. They are points which you have very little control over, such as whether or not you pickup a flower, self-pick to go mahjong, etc.
• Additional Points can be claimed depending on the hand that you are playing, and normally require some planning. The description of each hand lists the additional points that can be claimed for that hand.
