Welcome to Mahjong@WestsideHQ
Our Mahjong group meets in the restaurant area of WestsideHQ in Corinda each week. There is no fee for joining the group or attending our get-togethers – this is just a group of friends who enjoy playing mahjong and having a chat over a cup of coffee.
The group plays each Monday afternoon 2-4pm and Thursday morning 9:30-11:30am (except for some holiday periods).
The space at WestsideHQ is provided at no charge to us, but there is a requirement that everybody buys a drink and/or food every time they play. In addition, we strongly encourage players to stay for meals in the restaurant. If players do not abide by this requirement, then there is a possibility that the WestsideHQ management may revoke our permission to play on their premises.
New Players
We welcome new players who would like to learn and play with us.
The style of Mahjong that we play is based on Chinese Mahjong, but it has a number of variations to the traditional Chinese game, and we play according to the style and scoring of the Brisbane U3A Chinese Mahjong group. Therefore, new players who join us normally need to go through a couple of weeks of learning the style and scoring of the game (even if you have played other variations of mahjong previously). During this period we will pair you with a buddy who can provide guidance and answer questions.
If you would like to either find out more, or join us as a new player, please fill out the contact form below and we will reply to you. Because of the need to pair new players with a buddy, you may be put on a waiting list until a buddy becomes available.
Our WhatsApp group
We use a WhatsApp group chat to help plan tables for each session, and also to keep players informed of any updates. Therefore we encourage players to join that WhatsApp group. If you plan to attend our sessions regularly, and haven’t yet been added to the group, please contact Elizabeth or Peter.
