Our Mahjong group meets in the restaurant area of WestsideHQ in Corinda each week. There is no fee for joining the group or attending our get-togethers – this is just a group of friends who enjoy playing mahjong and having a chat over a cup of coffee. The group plays each Monday afternoon 2-4pm and Thursday morning 9:30-11:30am (except for some holiday periods).

Mahjong Scoring Guides

The style of mahjong that we play is based on the Chinese style, but it incorporates the scoring guide from a U3A group that plays at Greenslopes (see here for more details of that group).

Our group plays by the rule that you must have at least 4 points in order to successfully call Mahjong. It is possible to claim Mahjong either be collecting at least 4 individual points, or you can develop one of the listed Hands, and then add to the points (using the Plus points for that Hand). So the scoring guides identify the Hands vs the additional Points.

We have restructured and updated the scoring guides, to provide better descriptions of each scoring item, and order the items according to the level of difficulty – starting from easiest to hardest. The scoring guides come in two formats:

  • The first version has full descriptions of each hand
  • The second version simply lists the title of each hand, the points, and the additional points that can be claimed for the hands

Both versions use the same descriptions and the items are in the same order (so they are consistent).

Example Mahjong Hands

The document on this page shows examples of different Mahjong hands and gives a description of how the points are scored for each of the examples. It is a good document for beginners to read in conjunction with the scoring guides.
